It’s a night of various firsts. Foodwise, I’ve not been to Koocha before (I think I just have a distrust of anything within a certain radius of The Cat And Wheel). Otherwise, it’s both my first double date and also the first introduction of Alasdair to non-comedy friends - in this case, delightfully, to Zac and Martha. Koocha - a vegan mezze place - is their suggestion, knowing that Alasdair will be happy there. My “main” course, such as it is, is the Crispy Chick’in Fries - the chicken itself not quite as good, in my recollection, as that of the nuggets at Pastan, but still do the job well enough, and the sauce and pickles that round it out are very nice indeed. I help Alasdair out with some fried oyster mushrooms - deliciously crisp - with a saffron aioli and enjoy some tenderstem broccoli served with an almond puree and tahini. Everything seems to be liberally topped with pomegranate seeds - why not. My apple crumble cocktail, all cinnamon and vodka, is delicious, and I am taken aback at just how much I enjoy the brownie with vegan whipped cream - it is genuinely impressive. We move on for a drink at the Gallimaufry, where I am recognised for my comedy work, and that is the topper on an already lovely night.
