What a con. I mean, this is hyperbole, obviously, but what a con! I head to Bath early such that I might be there on time for a book talk, and could do with a quick bite to eat somewhere. It is late enough that the cafes are all shut, but I don’t want a proper meal. I spot Tapas Revolution on my way to the book shop and think to myself that this might just be the answer. Nice and easy, I’ll just have some croquettes and a drink and be done. Easy. The waitress is very happy with this idea and seats me outside, swift service, done nice and quickly. So quickly that to kill some further time, I order some olives as well. They, along with the croquettes, are nice enough. Somehow, this comes to £17. Seventeen pounds! For some croquettes, olives, and a mocktail. It’s the kind of maths that you know intuitively does make sense from the menu, but my god you put that all together and realise that you could have eaten something proper for that. I’m still baffled how that happened. I like to think I have learnt my lesson, but I’m not sure I have.
