1000 Tiny Birds

Priya Hall - Grandmother's Daughter (preview)

ARGCOMFEST, 2023-07-02

One of the great many joys of gigging in Bristol is when you get one or many of the Welsh contingent over to gig. Priya is one of those, a friend I’m always delighted to gig with and who I’ve seen come on leaps and bounds. So what an even greater joy to see her doing her debut show and to be previewing it at my favourite comedy festival. I saw her start to develop this material about a year and a half ago, I think (or my sense of timing is well off), at Belly Laughs, and she’s such a good storyteller. It is a gentle, calm demeanour, but one that captures the audience, who are very much on board. It’s a show of two halves, the first being more clubby (by her nature) material - well told stuff, like her coming out and the disastrous attempt to cast her in a musical - and the second going deeper into the reality of trying to have a baby as a lesbian couple on the NHS. It’s never preachy, infused with a general levity that suitably dips when it’s serious, and what a connection she makes. It’s not going to set the world alight, but it’s great to see Priya hitting it.
