Oh boy. I am not a fan. And I’m aware that on a wider context, that puts me in the minority, but in this room, I’m one of the whole. Dan Tiernan by all account has an excellent club set and won the BBC New Comedy Awards, but I cannot for the life of me see why. Stylistically, he’s aping Johnny Vegas in a way that has none of the pathos or depth, confusing volume for voice. The material is at best workmanlike, with nothing of any great inspiration. Part of the problem is that oh boy is this clunky. I can maybe imagine that with momentum, the character works, with the tension in the room being maintained and correctly ebbing and flowing. As it stands, this is 30 seconds of material, falter out, turn back to audience, check notebook for next bit, repeat. There’s nothing to grasp onto, and no chance for the thing to breathe as a whole, meaning it just simply doesn’t work. It’s baffling to me, but hey, what do I know. I’m not normally a contrarian in terms of hype cycles, so I don’t think it’s that. Maybe it’s just not for me. That’s ok.
