Oh boy. This is my second time seeing Jordan Brookes post Edinburgh award win, and it’s fascinating to watch what’s happened since. There is, dare I say it, a tilt towards accessibility. Not loads, he’s not suddenly turned into Michael McIntyre. Or maybe I’ve just become so much more niche that even this looks mainstream to me now. But this isn’t… off putting? In a way it’s been before. There’s a lot of silliness here, there’s the beginning of a through line around the Titanic, lord knows whether that will survive, there’s some beautifully over drawn out bits that could go even longer. There’s sound cues and one imagines lighting changes and boy. There’s depth, of course, but Brookes has managed to refocus it away from… not nihilism, but it’s constructive rather than depressive, the way he’s dealing with things, and that’s fascinating. I’m sad that his Fringe run is not aligned with when the gang and I are going up, so I’m not going to see a slightly more finished thing, but I hope this survives in some form to either next year’s Edinburgh or a tour or something, at least. Nice to see someone doing this kind of thing and, y’know, happy.
