The Ox

Bristol, 2023-02-23

The Ox! So chosen because it was available on First Table, which Soph alerted me to earlier this year. It’s not the best steak place in Bristol (that, my friends, is Pasture), but only one restaurant can be. The last time I visited The Ox was for my birthday last year, and yet somehow, looking back through my camera roll, I didn’t have a starter then? How disappointed I am in Past Sam. This time, I panic at the moment of ordering and go for the smoked mackerel rillettes, served with horseradish and grilled sourdough - it hits the spot nicely. A medium rare ribeye, with green peppercorn sauce, garlic butter, triple cooked chips, leeks and greens, and chargrilled mushrooms. is the main event. This is, I’ll admit, a lot. I can’t claim to have finished it. I’ll be honest, it was maybe a bit more on the medium side than the medium rare, but that aside (and I know that’s a sin to some people), it was very enjoyable. The chips were perfectly crisp, the mushrooms maybe the best I’ve ever had. The sauces were beautiful. Finish it off with a chocolate device with a coffee creme, and then got sit in the cold for 20 minute whilst your friend waits for a bus. Happy Thursday.
