In between a post-modern art exhibition and an opera about a school shooting, there’s obviously a need for some kind of transitionary meal. Alasdair suggests Mildred’s, a vegan restaurant with a number of locations but specifically one in Covent Garden - the dream, at least for today’s pracicalities. I’ve still yet to gaslight him into eating olives, so we avoid those. Instead, we share some harissa patatas bravas as a starter, finely balanced by the aiolii on offer with it. As ever, I’m torn between the options of having something naturally vegan or testing out a substitute. Today, it’s the latter, as I have a chimichurri chorizo hot dog, served with fries and a romesco dip. It’s genuinely very nice - I suppose a hot dog (as previously discussed) is probably quite high on the list of things that translate to vegan form, being barely meat to begin with, but it’s not just the toppings that make it work, the sausage itself is strong. With time to kill until the opera, I have a dessert, a five layer chocolate cake, coated in gold for some reason, but in tandem with the malt crumbs and salted caramel ice cream, you don’t really mind the needless cosmetics. I’ve since recommended it to a friend simply looking for a restaurant in London - surely that’s a shout.
