I have talked before of the joys of eating food after performing. How lucky I am, then, that Barrelhouse, the host venue of OPPO, the weekly comedy gig I help run, also happens to sell Detroit style pizza, not only whole but by the slice. Relieved of my duties, having at least induced a titter in the audience, I am free to indulge, but by this point it’s about 9.30 and I cannot imagine eating a whole pizza. I compromise with two slices of the pepperoni pizza, and enjoy them with a garlic and dill mayo dip. The caramelisation of the cheese on the edges against the deep set pan is a constant and pleasant surprise, the thick and chewy - yet never too much so - dough being a fine base to top this on, with a spicy pepperoni that gives a nice kick to the back of the throat. The dip is pleasingly flavoursome without being overbearing in either of its constituent elements, both of which can be very easily overdone. It is, all told, the perfect accompaniment to the feeling of having introduced the headline act, knowing your job for the evening is safely completed and all present are enjoying themselves. Sit back and relax. You’ve earned it.
