I wonder how Travel Man, as a concept, works in a post-pandemic landscape. God what a tedious premise for a 200 word write-up. Let’s not. It’s a different beast now anyway, with winningly dour Richard Ayoade replaced with causticly chipper Joe Lycett, bringing a decidedly more upbeat energy to the proceedings. The basic premise remains unchanged - throw Lycett and a comedian guest over the channel to a European city and let us live vicariously through their chic hotel, fancy restaurants, and well-intentioned day trip activities. They banter their way through the montages and a good time is had by all. I can’t say it hasn’t helped me - I ended up on a holiday to Bilbao last year entirely because that’s where Lycett and James Acaster went and it seemed like a good idea. Did I do any of the things they did? No idea, can’t remember. But over the course of this series, Sarah Millican, Mawaan Rizwan, Roisin Conaty, and Asim Chaudry make Vilnius, Dublin, Salzburg, and Marseille seem like the obvious contenders for the next solo holiday - especially Salzburg, with some of those pastries. Sometimes, it’s just nice to watch nice people do nice things, y’know?
