Consent S1

This is going to be very hard to write without coming across all “#NotAllMen”, but in watching Consent - a one-off Channel 4 drama on the absolute state of teenage boys and private schools - I had an epiphany as to why it just didn’t work for me. And it didn’t work from the very beginning, the main character’s misogynistic “#slutsandstuff” WhatsApp group messages being brought to life by its participants, every bit of it feeling unbelievable, over the top, exaggerated. And yet I know this stuff happens, every day, so what’s the disconnect? I think it’s that - really, truly, honestly - I don’t have a “#slutsandstuff” group chat. Never had. School, uni, adulthood, nothing. This behaviour is genuinely alien to me and the people I surround myself with. So any depiction of it rings hollow. Which is alarming, because statistically, it cannot hold that all my male friends are as upstanding as I think they are. A genuinely upsetting thought. The drama in Consent plays out in the expected beats, if slightly stultifyingly, but it fails in the necessary nuance to fully sell itself, a slight sense of preaching to the choir. The answer? Keep making them, focus on who you actually need to win over, and make them understand it. Don’t stop until they get it.
