1000 Tiny Birds

The Dutch

New York, 2023-04-10

Continuing today’s theme of nostalgia through food, dinner is at The Dutch. I also last visited The Dutch on that same trip in 2019 as Buvette. That was, to my memory, the first time I had an oyster, admittedly in a fried sandwich form. Who am I to miss a chance to return? This time, we dine on actual oysters to start, with I believe a shallot vinegar and a healthy squeeze of lemon. There are many fine looking options to follow, but if they tell me their chef has a dish described as his famous fried chicken, well, who am I to argue with that? Four pieces which I will euphemistically describe as being across the whole range of the chicken, coated and fried enough to maintain structural integrity without being overly greasy. They’re served with hot honey biscuits, that uniquely American way of basically just describing scones, and the requisite slaw that goes broadly untouched. I am uniquely up for dessert amongst the group, which is fine, I feel no shame in ordering a chocolate pudding cake. It’s only a matter of time before each of the others have had a bite of the rich, moist, and more dense than expected cake. Vindication.
