1000 Tiny Birds

Hart's Bakery

Bristol, 2023-06-09

Despite Hart’s Bakery now being my go to option for a train snack, should I be travelling in the shrinkingly small window in which they are open (who closes at 3pm!), it’s been quite some years - ? - since I’ve actually eaten in. But I have a Wellness Friday to travel to Cambridge, and so it seems like a good enough excuse to catch up with Zac. I go for a classic sausage roll, and my god are they good at those. The pastry is impeccably flakey, rich in butter and flavour itself, let alone the sausagemeat itself, in this instance with a hint of chili, but on a more recent occasion closer to writing this up, the spring onion and ginger creation was a big hit too. A surprise on the counter for sweet options, a tiramisu cake which - dare I say it - surpasses the original dessert itself. The cream and marscapone is as dense as the sponge is light and airy, as if it barely exists, floating in this world like a feather. Washed down with a sparkling elderflower and just a general vibe of good will on a sunny Friday afternoon, and how could you better start a journey?
