It’s hard to decide what exactly constitutes a restaurant for the purposes of this list. At the Everyman cinema tonight, I had a burger, and I’m counting it. At the Showcase a few weeks ago, I wolfed down a hot dog with the latest Avatar. I didn’t count that. Why is that? I think the subtextual rules which are now (at least partially) being made text are that I have to be enjoying what I would loosely term as a meal. For some ineffable reason, a cheap hotdog there not eaten in the context of a meal doesn’t feel like it counts. But the Everyman, with a proper menu and drinks list, serving a burger with fries (and, not unimportant psychologically, charging restaurant prices) to be eaten before the film begins is somehow different. I do really enjoy the burger and fries here. The fries are surprisingly well seasoned and maintain an ideal texture (despite a disconcerting tendency to clump together), and the burger itself is competently put together, which a decent choice of cheeses (although I note gruyere, my old standard here, has since gone missing from the menu). Much like some films I see here, I’m not telling you it’s objectively good, but I can enjoy it nonetheless.
