Springleaf with James Acaster and Nish Kumar

The O2, 2023-03-04

You wouldn’t necessarily expect to find, in the spiegeltent temporarily erected outside the O2 arena for Just For Laughs London, what will inevitably be one of the year’s comedy highlights for me. As very early promotion for his upcoming podcast Springleaf, James Acaster/Pat Springleaf (there’s about seven levels of meta-reference by the end of this hour, I lose track of the one on which we actually exist) is interviewed on stage by Nish Kumar. It feels like this hour can be summed up, in some sense, by the audience member asking the question “…aren’t you just assuming the Hamburglar’s sexuality?” Acaster and Kumar are both very willing to go on insane digressions with full-throated commitment, although Acaster more successfully pulls off the deadpan-ness to Kumar’s incredulity at what’s happening. They at one point manage to remember to play one clip from the podcast, amongst the jokes about Ryan Reynolds selling Deadpool-branded heroin on the streets of Wrexham. It’s carnage in the best, most infectiously hilarious way possible. Towards the end, Nish asks the audience if they can confirm that Thom Yorke was born in Wellingborough, before appreciating how perfect the calibration of audience and event is that he knew he’d get an answer. The dream.
