Bannerman's Bar, 2023-08-13

We find ourselves once again in Bannerman’s for a Trevor Lock show. Since deciding to retire the OG Community Circle concept a few years ago, Lock has nonetheless continued to explore a similar area, trying to find ways of drawing an audience together to create a show out of nothing. The seating arragement remains the same, two halves of the audience facing each other, eight audience members sat on stage with Lock. What’s different this year is more of a focus on realtime communication, with the audience encouraged (and, really, required) to text questions and comments throughout the show. Share didn’t quite reach the heights of e.g. Community Circle, and with a show like this, it’s hard to determine whether that’s down to this specific audience, or the format itself. A little of both, perhaps - it could do with more of a kickstart as to a reason for texting to begin with. But once the show is going, and people are contributing, it works well. I pretend to be George when texting in, which amuses me greatly. Crisps are shared, dances are performed, seats are swapped, a nationality is guessed. It may not reach the heights, but it’s still a lofty ride.
