Peter Pan Goes Wrong!

Barrymore Theatre, 2023-04-12

On my third time in New York, I figured it was about time I actually saw something on Broadway. This had been the plan for some time but I kept putting it off until pretty much two days before, which meant a) limited availability and b) expensive tickets for those limited availabilities. With only Andy in with me, we settled on Peter Pan Goes Wrong!, having seen the original The Play That Goes Wrong! over Christmas. Unknown to me until booking was that, inexplicably, Neil Patrick Harris was performing in it this week. Cool! It was fascinating to watch this with an American audience, who seem existentially uncomfortable going longer than 30 seconds without applauding. NPH gets a loud response every time he comes on stage, needlessly so, but he is much better than the presumption of stunt casting some people might have. The play itself is slightly flabbier than its older sibling, broader and lacking in as much momentum, but towards the end it ratchets up both the stakes and the speed and settles into a very strong groove. It would be interesting to see this on the West End and compare it - I don’t think it would be an overwhelming salve, but I wonder how much is catered to the American sensibility.
