Back once again at ARG, having fully.lost track of how many years it has has been. First show of the weekend is Freya Parker (half of sketch duo Lazy Susan) doing her debut solo show. A lot of these facts are evident from this hour. She clearly has a sketch writer’s mind, with some excellent premises spiralling and descending into madness, but all too often fizzling out without a proper punchline. Actual jokes are repeated often, dulling the impact. Parker is an engaging presence on stage, likeable and pitching her persona right for the material. There is, for honestly the first time I can really remember off the top of my head, a dead dad pathos turn at the 45 minute mark, and whilst obviously meant sincerely and with relevance to the show, of sorts, it’s hard to feel like Parker is doing anything massively or particularly interesting. Still, there’s a thematic through line and whilst there is more to be wrung out of the childhood stories of being a cheeky guy (didn’t even reach the rule of three), the referral to the crowd often as a chuckle of cheeky guys for the mass noun does remain largely delightful throughout.
