Ahir Shah - Ends (WIP)

Monkey Barrel, 2023-08-14

Shortly before the Fringe, I receive an email telling me that Ahir Shah has unfortunately not been able to dedicate the time necessary to bring this show to his standards and as such is rebranding it as a WIP and offering a partial refund to reflect that - we decline to take him up on that offer, he deserves the two quid. Still, though, the brass neck of the man to offer this up and to claim it’s a work in progress. It’s the only show I’ve seen this year at the Fringe that resulted in a standing ovation. It is properly funny, personally emotional, and societally minded, tackling the state of the NHS, the political and racial signficance of Rishi Sunak becoming prime minister, and the dissonance between those two things; but also, about his recently deceased grandfather, his story, and the impact he’s had on Shah’s life. The off stage introduction talks of the time his family gathered around to watch Goodness Gracious Me, and the impact hearing his grandparents laughing had on him. He has enormously done them justice here. I don’t know what this will become, or how different it will look, but if it’s this good as a preview…
