Ore Agbaje-Williams and Naoise Dolan in conversation

Bath Festival, 2023-05-20

I’ve been a fan of Naoise Dolan’s work since the publication of her debut novel, Exciting Times, in lockdown one, one of my favourite books of 2020. With her new book out shortly, I was delighted to find Dolan would be doing an event in Bath with another author, Ore Agbaje-Williams. Although I only came to begin reading The Three Of Us about 30 minutes before this event, it also became coloured in its own way by lockdown, being written by Agbaje-Williams in NaNoWriMo that year. No matter that I was much less familiar with her work - both Dolan and Agbaje-Williams were extremely engaging in this conversation, hosted with great insight by Sarah Shaffi. Covered were the topics of writing with humour, writing with multiple perspectives, how writing about friendship differs from writing about romantic relationships, and how the spark comes about. I’m able to sneak in a question about first and third person, and find myself in a conversation with the two of them - I should stress, prompted and sustained by them - about a thing I’m writing at the moment at the post-event signing. I am delighted to look back and note the inscription Dolan has left in my book - now I really must finish writing the thing.
