Adam Riches is The Guys Who...

Cow Café, 2023-08-12

A favourite show of mine from 2018 was Adam Riches’ “Is The Guy who…”, taking place in a café, as he prowled amongst the audience to find a female audience member he could attempt to harass into going out with him. Following a change of tack last year for a murder mystery, Riches somewhat returns to the concept but moreso. It’s notably different from its original, mostly in that this feels more like “a show” - the tables and chairs are more arranged to form a stage-like area; the show begins with him announcing himself from off-stage, rather than just putting his newspaper down and standing from his seat; and mostly, rather than committing to a single character, presenting a range of them, all of them promising a different approach to fundamentally the same thing - coercing audience members into glory on stage with him. This ranges from a grape in mouth catching competition to training as a barista. Ultimately, Riches has shifted his focus away from a pointed critique of toxic masculinity to a more - to a degree - selfish show, designed to let him do the comedy that Covid has denied him for three years. It’s hard to blame him, but whilst it’s still very funny and nerve-inducing, it does feel less of a whole.
