The HPE office here is on 5th Avenue, just opposite the New York Public Library, so I’m remarkably well placed to go explore. When I popped to Doughnut Plant in Grand Central Station the other day, I clocked in the food court an outpost of Magnolia Bakery, a name which rang a bell for some reason but I still cannot place it. In any event, it looked pretty damn good, and so another lunch time to come, I thought I’d pop in to grab an afternoon snack. I end up with a fullsome slice of chocolate cake with a vanilla icing (I spoke too soon upon ordering, not having noticed the chocolate cake with a chocolate icing, which - obviously - would have been much more preferable). Back in my broom cupboard in the office, I tuck away at it across the afternoon. The cake itself is very nice, not too dry, quite light and airy. The icing is a bit cloying though, very thickly ratio’d and, yes, maybe I would have found this less so with a complementary chocolate icing. But I would certainly go back, regretting not getting a cupcake or something as well, just for the breadth of experience. Any excuse, eh.
