1000 Tiny Birds

Mitch Hedberg - Strategic Grill Locations

Stand up album, 2023-09-10

This is really the culmination of a year long existential crisis, and fair play to Black County, New Road, they’ve come out with more from theirs than I have any of mine. Faced with their lead singer leaving the band a few days before the release of their second album, the now-six-piece was forced to regroup and decide what to do next. Over small gigs and summer festival sets, they retired all the old songs and pieced together a number of new tracks instead, not really intended to be the future, just to be something, anything. To mark that is Live At Bush Hall, a concert film made up of 3 gigs across two nights last December. The material is the same across the gigs, but the premise differs - a West Country farm, a haunted pizza parlour, an 80s school prom - such that it’s deliberately easy to see the edits between shows. There are songs to rival their previous best (Turbines, Dancers, I Won’t Always Love You), and the performances are so embued with the still raw emotion of confronting loss (in their own way) through carrying on. Also nice to very briefly spot myself in the background of one shot being very happy about being given free pizza.
