It’s going to be hard to review Baby J, because I’ll inevitably not so much be writing about the special in and of itself, but I suppose my perceived differences in seeing it live in person compared to the recorded version. It does, on some level, lose some of its sheen on tape, and not particularly just through having seen the material before. His delivery in Baby J felt somewhat less sharp, less vital, compared to the January performance. It’s a subtle change, though - as he remarks, this is a new Mulaney, one who does not have the slight hyperactivity on stage, and it wasn’t like we were getting that version of him live. The writing and material is still as strong as ever, though - a closing routine about buying and selling a watch is imbued with the precision we’ve come to expect, and it’s a delight to watch. It does also feel like a pleasingly comprehensive document of the show I saw - no missing routines, no major structural changes. It remains a fascinating prospect to see where Mulaney goes next - I can only hope that he does actually do the commissioned sequels to the Sack Lunch Bunch, though.
