A few minutes before Sasami comes on stage, I unexpectedly make a friend. Liz has come over from Keynsham from this, the American tinged accent of a girl growing up in Moldova on a diet of Friends and YouTube. It is nice to have company for the gig, worried as I am that I have to make her feel vindicated in her choice to strike up a conversation with me over someone else. It’s the kind of gig where I’ve listened to Yeule’s most recent album a few times, but not enough for any semblance of recognition; mostly in service of the fact that her rising profile means she’s unlikely to play Bristol again (I’ve seen this too many times now to not worry about being bitten again). Minor tech issues two songs in aside, it’s a fun set, her blend of 2000s pop rock and electronica making for a nicely swaying time. There’s a song I’m unable to place, presumably on her upcoming album, which shares its chord progression with Where Is My Mind - not a bad thing. Sasami supports doing what is basically glorified karaoke - the songs aren’t bad, but it’s not the same. I walk my new friend to her bus stop, as I am a gentleman, and wander home.
