The Tallest Man On Earth

Rough Trade Bristol, 2023-04-22

The stage times for Record Store Day at Rough trade maybe implied more than intended. It would have been easy, for example, to get the impression that with The Tallest Man On Earth playing at 12pm, and the next act at 1pm, you might be expecting a decent chunk of music. Wrong! Three songs and out, baby. And you know what? You genuinely love to see it. It was free, he had just got into Bristol, he had a proper gig that night, and he hung around afterwards to talk to people and take photos and whatnot. The setlist as it was comprised songs from the new album, with which I remain unfamiliar, but cursory googling post-gig suggest I head Every Little Heart, Slowly Rivers Turn, and another song. Each of them feel inherently “The Tallest Man On Earth”, all delicately plucked guitars in open tunings and lyrics imbued with some vague idea of Swedish sensibility. It made me want to go home and listen to Dark Bird Is Home, his 2015 album and my only real experience of his work. I did, and it was wonderful to return to it. The gig did its job, and I had a lovely time thank you very much.
