1000 Tiny Birds

Suede (+Desperate Journalist)

Bath Forum, 2023-03-03

A rare gig in Bath, and an early birthday present for Ben, as we go to see Suede - him for the first time, me for the… I’ve lost track. It’s been quite a number in the last nearly 10 years. My long standing claim for Suede is that they put bands half their age to shame in terms of energy and dedication to the performance. This remains the case now, touring for their 9th album. The setlist is expertly put together, an excellent balance of the new album Autofiction (opening with, interestingly, its closing track, Turn Off Your Brain And Yell, which nonetheless works a treat), the hits, and the deep cuts. At one point, we are treated to an unplugged, unamplified rendition of The Wild Ones by Brett Anderson alone. Bloodsports is sorely underrepresented, with the traditional It Starts And Ends With You appearing on the setlist but not even being played. But I am in no position to complain. The sweat at the end, in the best possible way, is prize enough. Desperate Journalist do a fine job opening, if nothing particularly special. I am tempted to see them again in Bristol, but ultimately don’t. There’ll be another occasion I’m sure.
