There are some films that I watch every year on a given day. I like traditions. I find them comforting in a probably somewhere on the spectrum kind of way. Christmas is a very big time of year, but not exclusively. One of the obvious ones is, of course, Groundhog Day. Why would you not watch the film Groundhog Day, right? Makes sense. So obviously you do it every year, right, and reschedule and rearrange and ensure that you’re in a position to not miss it one year. Definitely not obsessive. There is something quite pleasingly thematically resonant in the idea of watching Groundhog Day on such a recurrent non-breaking schedule. It’s fun to notice the the things I didn’t notice before - even now there’s new things to be found, which I genuinely find exciting. It speaks to me on a slightly different level each year in what I take from it and what I appreciate in it, like so many of the other films that I go through this with. It remains incredibly funny, laugh out loud so even a good 10 or so years into this tradition at this point, and I will still find myself singing “I got you, babe” to myself for days afterwards. See you next year.
